How to Find the Right Esthetician!

I have been an Esthetician for almost 11 years now. I have worked at several salons over the course of my career to finally being able to be my own boss. The right esthetician can be the difference from great skin and not-so-great skin. You can always tell who loves what they do to those who do not. So if you would like to find out what makes a great esthetician and red flags you should avoid, keep on reading.

What makes a good esthetician?

  1. They will always ask you a-lot of questions.

This can be from observing your skin, have you fill out questionaires upon arrival or before a service, if you are on any specific medications, what products they use and explaining the process of the treatments. A good esthetician is like a detective and will look for all clues as to what she will need. Therefore she will need to ask the questions to gather cruical information, so she can choose the right products for you. The services should always be tailored.

  1. They will customize your treatment/experience

This can be range from having special throws, heated facial bed, ask about what you would like to watch on the TV, what music you might want on, silent appointment request, maybe they will use specific products that work for your skin and adjusting anything for you. Basically they go the extra mile for you and you will feel special to them.

  1. Their room is spotless

This is plain and simple, if their spa is dirty you should find a new esthetician. The lack of proper sanitization can bring you harm and lead to an unsafe treatment. We are dealing with blood, fingernails and bodily fluids - this is something we should all be taking seriously. Make sure you are looking at the tools/implements are they dusty or dirty? If anything is screaming dirty - find a different spa.

  1. They make you smarter

Your esthetician should be knowledgeable in the latest treatments, ingredients and stay in the loop of education. They should always be open to your questions and help you follow the best home-care regime so you will see the best results.

Red flags you shouldn't ignore

  1. They will never ask you questions. I've had clients tell me, that when they were receiving a facial, they weren't sure what to do next as their esthetician left the room without instruction! How awkward LOL! Always inform your clients. If your esthetican is not asking questions - how will they know how to perform the best service?

  2. Not providing home-care instructions. I know we can all be afraid to ask our clients to purchase products and it's not everyone's cup of tea. However this is so important as 80% of it makes up the service you just provided. These home-care instructions are crucial to help maintain the best results of the treatment as well to extend the results in-

    between.

  1. They are distracted. Does your esthetician listen to you and give you thoughtful answers? If the answer is no, your esthetician may be distracted and it is a big no-no when providing a one-on-one service. Your esthetician should be engaging, not zoning out watching the TV or checking their social media. This is where accidents can happen, irriation, pain or injury could take place. A good esthetician will focus their mind and energy on you and only you during a treatment. Unless there is an emergency or sometimes we can be human but otherwise this should still be a professional setting.

I hope this helps you choose the right esthetician for you. It's important you and your esthetician connect well and the vibes are good. Sometimes we might not always collide with the first one we find and that's ok. I myself can be a chamelon and match several different personalities and it's why I love my career. I get to meet so many different people and the connections I have with my clients mean everything to me. I want them to know they are well looked after and the fact that they trust me - makes me want to continue to educate myself and show up not only for me but for my clients. I only want the best for them.
